Biographical Note

Edward Carlisle Boynton, born 1824 in Windsor, Vermont, graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1846 and served twelve years in the United States Army before joining the University of Mississippi faculty in 1856. Boynton was as a Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology until the outbreak of the Civil War when he was dismissed from the University in 1861.


Scope and Content Note

Edward Carlisle Boynton, a Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Geology at the University of Mississippi from 1856 until 1861, was an avid photographer. The collection contains glass plate negatives of antebellum scenes of the University of Mississippi campus as well as family photographs and self-portraits.
