Biographical Note

Dr. Charles Noyes

Born in Natchez, Mississippi, Noyes attended Rozelle Grammar School and Central High School in Memphis, Tennessee. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Missouri and his Ph.D. was from the University of Texas. Noyes taught at the University of Tennessee and the University of Missouri before arriving at the University of Mississippi.

From 1942 to 1946, Noyes served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Noyes came to the University of Mississippi in 1953 with a focus in the Restoration and 18th century English literature. Noyes served as Provost in 1963-1964 and later served as acting Vice Chancellor, Associate Vice Chancellor and Director of the Summer Session. He retired from the University of Mississippi in 1982.

During the 1962 University Integration, Noyes composed speeches for Chancellor J.D. Williams. Noyes was a benefactor of the J.D. Williams Library and membership chair of Friends of the Library support group. Noyes dies 30 August 2008.

Miriam Weems

Graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1963, Weems later attended the New York School of Interior Design. She received her Fine Arts Degree in 1986 from the University of Mississippi.

Miriam Weems is a Mississippi artist and former student of Dr. Charles Noyes. Her work Mostly Mississippi was published by Quail Ridge Press, 2007.

The Miriam Weems / Dr. Charles Noyes Collection contains newsletters, ephemera and correspondence between Dr. Charles Noyes and former student Miriam Weems. The correspondence contains personal subjects as well as discussion of the University and the Libraries. The materials post-date his retirement from the University of Mississippi.
