Historical Note

Ichauway Plantation is a 28,000-acre quail hunting preserve near Newton, Baker County, Georgia. It was founded in the 1920s by Robert W. Woodruff, Chairman of the Coca-Cola Company. After his death in 1985, the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation established the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center at the Ichauway Plantation in 1991. The hunting plantation and later ecological center is one of the biggest employers in Baker County. From 1991 to 1994, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi sent graduate students to conduct interviews, take photographs, and document the life and culture of the people who worked on the preserve or lived near it in the Newton, GA, vicinity. In addition to documenting the traditional culture of the area, project researchers from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi also assisted with the Ichauway Adult Learning Class. The researchers wanted the Ichauway Documentary Project to be accessible to all members of the community. These researchers helped their students with the presentation, editing, and writing of personal histories, experience stories, tall tales, and family tales in order to create the class’ textbook. Researchers tape-recorded and transcribed an interview with each class member. The Center for the Study of Southern Culture created this class in coordination with the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Center.
