Edwin Granberry Collection (MUM00206). The Department of Archives and Special Collections, J.D. Williams Library, The University of Mississippi.
Edwin Phillips Granberry was born in Meridian, Mississippi on April 18, 1897. He entered the University of Florida at the age of nineteen, but his education was interrupted by service with the U.S. Marines in WWI. Initially intending to be a concert pianist, he eventually decided on writing as a career.
In 1920, he graduated from Columbia University to teach Romance languages for three years at Miami University in Ohio. His postgraduate work included attending George Pierce Baker's '47 workshop, from 1922 to 1924, where he produced the play Hitch your Wagon to a Star.
On March 22, 1924, he married Mabel Leflar, and they later had three sons.
From 1925 to 1933, he held the position of Latin and French Master at Stevens School in New Jersey. In 1933, he was persuaded to become writer in residence at Rollins College in Florida after the great success of his short story A Trip to Czardis, and he retained this position until his retirement in 1971. At Rollins, he earned the title Irving Bacheller Professor of Creative Writing in 1940, and was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature in 1945.
Granberry was to produce numerous short stories, the most famous of which was A Trip to Czardis. This was first published in The Forum in 1932, and won the O. Henry Memorial Award as that year's best story. In 1966, Granberry produced a novel with the same name, expanding on the events preceding those of his short story, and incorporating the original story as its final chapter.
Granberry's other novels were The Ancient Hunger (1927); Strangers and Lovers (1928) and The Erl King (1930). Other notable works include stage and (unfinished) novelized version of The Falcon, a screenplay of A Trip to Czardis and a long-term partnership with the artist Roy Crane (to be replaced by Henry Schlensker after Crane's death) to produce the comic strip Buz Sawyer.
Granberry and his wife became close personal friends of Margaret Mitchell when he was among the very first to favorably review Mitchell's newly-published novel Gone With the Wind, in 1936. Granberry immediately recognized the importance of Mitchell's work, proclaiming it a literary landmark. The Granberrys remained friends with Mitchell until her death in 1949.
Edwin Granberry died on Dec 5, 1988.
The Edwin Granberry Collection is mainly composed of correspondence, ranging from 1907 to 1990 and arranged chronologically under several subheadings; manuscripts of various versions of Granberry's fiction plus sundry other writings, arranged alphabetically by title; and clippings from newspapers and magazines, primarily regarding Granberry's fiction and the events surrounding the death of Margaret Mitchell, arranged chronologically under subheadings.
