E-Journal FAQ
1. How do I know if the library has electronic access to a journal? When you do a journal title search in the library catalog you should see [Electronic Resource] on the title line and the location field should say internet.
2. What does it mean when I get the “You are not authorized to view this page” message? If you are trying to access a library subscription (journal article, database, etc.) from off-campus, you will first need to log in using your name and University of Mississippi ID barcode number. There is a "help page" available to further explain the barcode.
If you are on campus, or have already successfully logged in from off campus, there might be a problem with the subscription provider. Please let a librarian know about the problem, and tell them if you are on or off campus and the steps you took trying to access the item.
3. The library catalog shows that we should have access to a journal but I am being asked for a user name and password. Some journals and databases have a “My Journal/Database” service. If you register, this will usually allow you to save searches and articles. This is an optional service, and you do not need to register on a site in order to view the articles.
If the user name and password is not part of this type of service, please ask a librarian for assistance.
4. There is a difference in the title of a journal in the library catalog and on the web. Am I accessing the correct journal? The best indicator of the correct journal is if the content reflects what you expected. Sometimes content from a previous title may be listed on the publisher’s site at the current title. Or, a journal’s proper title may not be the name by which it is commonly known. Lastly, if words change late in a title (after the fifth word), cataloging rules do not consider the title changed.
5. I am having trouble accessing a journal through the library catalog, but when I go to the publisher site I am able to view the journal. Am I doing something wrong? You are not doing anything wrong. Probably, the url for the journal has changed since the journal’s record was last updated. Please report problems to to the reference desk at 662-915-5855 or the "Ask a Librarian" e-mail service.
6. How do I determine what the library has for a journal when I am looking at the library catalog? When you are looking at the library catalog record you may see a Library Has statement which is the best indicator as to what the library holdings are and where items are located in the library and/or on the web. If you are in the electronic record for a journal you should see a hyperlink directing you to the electronic version which should list the dates available that the library should have access to.
