Black Graduate and Professional Student Association - History

About Us  |  History  |  Constitution  |  Links

The Black Graduate and Professional Student Association was founded in 1988 by men and women who saw value in the unification of those graduates seeking the common goal of higher education. Through progressiveness and solidarity we stand as representatives of positivity and achievement. Thus we proudly adorn the motto, "The Black Graduate and Professional Student Association: An exhibition of excellence." It symbolizes the commitment and dedication of the BGPSA members toward masters degrees, law degrees, and PhD's.

The BGPSA serves as a medium for developing the leadership potential and ability of its members. We network to create an environment for the African-American graduate student that will promote both the enhancement of professionalism and the advancement of our economic status as effective tools in the furtherment of our race.

In 1996, the BGPSA promised and delivered a dynamic and progressive year. Among the various social and academic activities planned were a host of seminars and workshops. These intensive sessions were designed in collaboration with administration to assist in the financial, professional, personal, psychological, and academic support and well-being of the BGPSA members.

Some of the seminars presented:

* Strategies for Successful Matriculation of Minority Graduate Students/How to Survive
* Money Management Workshop
* Safer Sex Workshop

BGPSA activities ceased some time after 1997. However, the organization was revived in 1999 thanks to the help of Donald Cole, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, and a handful of graduate students who attended an organizational meeting called in February of that year. In 1999, membership increased and the organization held two socials, a Halloween party, and published a newsletter. In 2000, our numbers continued to increase, and we sponsored several socials, volunteered at Gordon's Headstart Center, participated in the Black History Month Unity Rally, and had a rummage sale. The organization also participated in intramural sports and were the champs of co-recreational basketball. We attended the 12th annual National Black Graduate Student Conference, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We expect great things in our coming year and plan to continue are commitment to community service events and workshops.
