In case the news has not reached all of our alumni, we report that The University of Mississippi is the recipient of the largest private gift ever donated in the state. Jim Barksdale, former chief executive at Netscape and Federal Express, has donated $100 million dollars to establish the Barksdale Reading Institute, which will be organized by the University in conjunction with the state Department of Education and other public colleges and universities. Drs. Martha and Jim Chambless of The University of Mississippi School of Education were involved in developing the program, whose goal is to enhance the reading skills of public school children during the critical K-3 grade years.
