JOSHUA H. HOWARD
Croft Associate Professor of History

and International Studies

Following the maxim, "Xuehai wubian" (Learning is like the boundless sea), Joshua Howard has devoted the past two decades to the study of Chinese history, language and culture. Dr. Howard received his B.A. in East Asian Studies from Oberlin College in 1988, and his Ph.D in Chinese history from the University of California at Berkeley in 1998. He began teaching in the History Department and the Croft Institute for International Studies on the eve of the millennium. Publications include Workers at War: Labor in China’s Arsenals, 1937-1953 (Stanford University Press, spring 2004) and two articles on the history of Chinese labor and class formation during the 1940s. His current research focuses on the socialist utopian thought, experiences, and public memory of revolutionary martyrs in 20th century China.
