Copyright & Image Usage Policy

The Imaging Services department is a quasi-auxiliary of The University of Mississippi. Although Imaging Services receives partial funding from the state for most staff positions, the remainder of the staff salaries and all overhead cost are funded by charges for services rendered.

All University of Mississippi Imaging Services photos are the intellectual property of the Imaging Services department and protected from unauthorized usage by United States Copyright laws.

 

Copyright laws protect against the unauthorized distribution or sale of Imaging Services photo(s) via physical or electronic means by anyone other than Imaging Services and its designees.

 

Copyrights are non-transferable; but limited usage rights for Imaging Services photos are available to university departments, media outlets and for commercial usage.

 

 

Usage Rights

 

Departmental, Commercial, Media and Individual clients who hire Imaging Services to photograph an event(s) or subject(s) automatically receive Usage Rights to all of the images created on assignment.

All original images created by Imaging Services will be become part of the Imaging Services archives. Imaging Services archive photos will be available for usage by future clients and may be available for on-line viewing and print orders unless otherwise agreed upon before the images are created.

Clients who would like to use Imaging Services archive photo(s) must obtain usage rights to the photo(s) from Imaging Services or its designee.

Clients are prohibited from the distribution or sale of prints or electronic versions of Imaging Services photo(s). Once usage rights are obtained, clients may use Imaging Services photo(s) as part of a larger publication/project.

In order to protect from unauthorized distribution, Imaging Services request that copyrighted photo(s) only be published on the web at low resolution (320 pixels in the largest dimension or less) or that the images are adequately protected from being downloaded or copied by website visitors.

 

 

Usage Rights-University Departments

Usage rights are available to University of Mississippi departments at a special university rate of $10 per image for low resolution (800-pixels across the largest dimension) or $20 per image for full resolution (typically 3,000 pixels or more in the largest dimension).

Once the client has obtained usage rights to the photo(s), the department may include these images as a part of any departmental publication (brochure, newsletter, program, webpage, etc.) and may use the images an unlimited number of times.

 

Usage Rights-Commercial

Commercial clients who wish to purchase usage rights to Imaging Services photos to promote a product or service, may do so only if the intended usage is approved by Imaging Services. The standard commercial rate for Imaging Services photos is $250 per image for one-time usage.

 

Usage Rights-Media Outlets

Recognized media clients (newspaper, magazine, television, etc.) who wish to use Imaging Services photos for editorial purposes may purchase one-time usage rights from Imaging Services at a mutually agreed upon rate.

The University of Mississippi Public Relations office is the sole designee authorized to make Imaging Services photo(s) available to media outlets for editorial usage only. The PR office may elect to wave usage fees if the intended usage of the photo(s) is approved by the PR office and the PR office provides the photo(s) to the media client.

 

 

Photo Credits

 

Photography credits are always appreciated. Preferred photo credits are “Photographer’s name-Imaging Services”, “University of Mississippi Imaging Services” or simply “UM-Imaging Services”. 

Photographic prints of all Imaging Services photos are also available up to 42” in width. Please call for pricing and availability.
