Farewell to Joyce Hertko

The Office of International Programs held a farewell reception to honor Dr. Joyce Hertko on Friday, September 17th from 2:00 to 4:00pm.

Many International Students and Scholars came to wish her all the best.   Several students came with their cameras to have their picture taken with her.

The Staff at the Office of International Programs wish Joyce all the best in her new position at the University of Indiana.


New Positions Announcement

Michael Johansson, formerly Coordinator of International Admissions and Recruitment, has been appointed Acting Director of the Office of International Programs.

Jean Robinson, former International Services Assistant, has been appointed Acting Assistant Director of the Office of International Programs.

International Students and Scholars,

Jean and I are honored to be serving international students and scholars in our new administrative roles.  We accept our added responsibilities knowing we have the full suppport of OIP staff, international students and
scholars, and University administration.  We ask for your patience and understanding during this time of transition as we bring the office back to its full complement of staff members.  We will continue to provide you with
the programs and services you deserve.

Mandatory Orientation Session Videos

All new international students who were not able to attend any one of the six mandatory orientation sessions must come to the Office of International Programs to  watch the video-tape of the session(s).  Please allow at
least 30 minutes to watch each video.  We recommend that you watch no more than two videos in one sitting.

Applying for a Social Security Number

The Social Security Administration is in Oxford on the following Thursdays in 1999 from 9:00a.m. until 11:00a.m.:

 September 23
October 14 & 28
November 11 only
December 9 only

You need to bring a complete application form, your I-20 or IAP-66, and your passport. Application forms are available in the office.

A lot of your social security problems can be solved over the phone. You can call the Tupelo office at 662 842 6582 or fax them at 662 841 2895.

Conversation Partners Program

.Any international student interested in being matched with an American conversation partner is encouraged to contact Dr. Nancy Wiggers or Paul Sanburg at the Office of International Programs by 5p.m. Tuesday, September 21.  Please note, you must contact either Dr. Nancy Wiggers or Paul Sanburg if you are interested and/or to confirm your continued
interest expressed if you already signed up at the international student mandatory orientation session(s).

Writing Center Workshop

University of Mississippi Writing Center Workshops are being offered in Kinard Hall 106. No Registration necessary.

Very Special Art
Sponsored by North Mississippi Regional Center

Very Special Art, is an opportunity to brighten someone's day and teach them something about your culture and language.  North Mississippi Regional Center has invited international students from The University of Mississippi to visit special education children and adults with special needs from 9a.m. to noon on Thursday, September 30.  Children of all ages and adults with special needs are looking forward to meeting you and learning more about your home country, language, culture, and customs. International students in past years have shared with and made cards for children and adults from the North Mississippi Regional Center.

If interested, sign-up at the Office of International Programs, Barnard Hall, 1st Floor for shifts of one hour (i.e., 9-10a.m. or 10-11 or 11-noon).  Please contact Paul Sanburg, International Student Advisor, at the Office of International Programs for questions or more information.
 



Friendship International House 1999
Christmas Holiday

Friendship International House (FIH) is a hospitality program and Southern Baptist Christian ministry to international students during the Christmas holidays.  International students throughout the United States are invited to attend.  To apply, you must be a non-American graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in a U.S. college or university.  You may be single or married, and have children.  This program is open to people of all races and religions.  All participants must be at least 18 years of age, except for children of students who apply.

Dates and Locations
The official dates are December 18, 1999 to January 1, 2000, unless indicated otherwise by the local FIH location.

Memphis, Tennessee - WMU of the Shelby Baptist Association WMU - Dates: December 18 - January 3
Nashville, Tennessee - Nashville Baptist Association - International Ministry - Dates:  December 18 - January 3
States with other locations include:  Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Texas.

Fees and Deadlines
 *Applications received by November 12 must be accompanied by the $50.00
"Early Bird" registration fee.
*Applications received after November 12 must be accompanied by the
regular $75.00 registration fee.
**No applications will be accepted after November 30, 1999.

Assignments are made after October 15, 1999.  Applications will not be accepted by phone, and no space can be reserved until the application form and registration fee are in FIH office.  Don't wait!  Some locations, like Florida, fill up early. Send your application as soon as possible.
