Simple Web Page/Site Tips
Here are a number of design tips for creating good web pages -
- Keep it simple.
- Keep it consistent.
- Conveying tone is difficult on a web page.
- Consider your audience in areas of content, layout, modem speed, and browser capability.
- Keep pages short.
- Organize your information - too much info on a page is not good.
- Organize important links on a page.
- Frames are useful, but tricky to implement.
- Imagemaps should be small and acompanied by text links.
- Use tables to format your page, but don't nest tables within table.
Here are a few site design tips -
- Plan and organize your site before you begin, if possible.
- Find a good page and site editing package to create and maintain your site.
- Keep all your frequently used images in one location.
- Keep your page design and layout consistent across the site.
- Create a template for your standard page layout for creation of new pages and maintenance of current pages.
- Use the 5 by 3 rule -
Don't have more than 5 or so major links per page and you should be able to find almost all important information within 3 clicks. This creates 125 end pages which should be enough for a user to get to the area they want.
- Create a search engine for your site if you have a large number of pages.
