Simple Web Page/Site Tips

Here are a number of design tips for creating good web pages -

  • Keep it simple.
  • Keep it consistent.
  • Conveying tone is difficult on a web page.
  • Consider your audience in areas of content, layout, modem speed, and browser capability.
  • Keep pages short.
  • Organize your information - too much info on a page is not good.
  • Organize important links on a page.
  • Frames are useful, but tricky to implement.
  • Imagemaps should be small and acompanied by text links.
  • Use tables to format your page, but don't nest tables within table.

Here are a few site design tips -

  • Plan and organize your site before you begin, if possible.
  • Find a good page and site editing package to create and maintain your site.
  • Keep all your frequently used images in one location.
  • Keep your page design and layout consistent across the site.
  • Create a template for your standard page layout for creation of new pages and maintenance of current pages.
  • Use the 5 by 3 rule -

Don't have more than 5 or so major links per page and you should be able to find almost all important information within 3 clicks. This creates 125 end pages which should be enough for a user to get to the area they want.

  • Create a search engine for your site if you have a large number of pages.
