Graduate Journalism

A Master of Arts in Journalism from the Ole Miss j-department prepares graduate students for doctoral work and careers in research and academia.

In addition to meeting Graduate School admission requirements, applicants must submit a letter detailing their reasons for wishing to pursue a M.A. in journalism. Please send this letter directly to the Department of Journalism. Applicants also should provide three letters of recommendation, including one addressing the applicant's mass media experience, if applicable.

Applicants who do not have the equivalent of an undergraduate major in journalism will be required to take 12 hours of approved undergraduate journalism courses (reduced by any acceptable undergraduate journalism hours that have been completed). Students who do not have the equivalent of an undergraduate major in journalism but who have work experience in the field may submit appropriate credentials and work samples to be considered in lieu of undergraduate courses.

Each student pursuing an M.A. from the j-department is required to complete a thesis before degree completion. Thesis work is research-intensive and will be done with the guidance of faculty members.

For more detailed information, please see the University of Mississippi's catalog of graduate programs and courses.

Please note: If you wish to receive information or schedule a campus visit, it is simply an e-mail away. Please contact us here at the j-department and we can help you schedule a visit that answers all your questions.
