The University of Mississippi School of Law, established in 1854, is the fourth-oldest state law school in the country. Throughout its history, the School of Law has served as a training ground for leaders of the state, the bar and the nation. During the 20th century alone, the law school produced from its graduates 10 of the state’s 25 governors, nearly a third of the state’s lieutenant governors, half the justices on the Mississippi Supreme Court and nearly two-thirds of the presidents of the Mississippi Bar.
Currently, both U.S. senators, one of five congressmen, two 5th Circuit Court of Appeals judges, 12 United States District Court judges, three United States federal magistrates, the governor, the state attorney general and the chancellor of the university are graduates of The University of Mississippi School of Law.
The nationally recognized UM law school currently boasts an enrollment of about 550 students, a distinguished faculty of 37 full-time legal scholars and a law library comprising more than 325,000 volumes or volume equivalents. Eleven endowed lectures and chairs enable the law school to enrich the academic program by bringing outstanding jurists, scholars and educators to campus to share their views on a wide variety of legal issues.
Legal education at The University of Mississippi prepares graduates for the practice of law in the United States, for government and public service, and for many other endeavors in which legal education is a necessary or helpful background. The traditional law program is enhanced by the incorporation of lawyering skills, legal ethics and professionalism throughout the curriculum. Our skills curriculum is among the most innovative in the country, and our trial practice and advocacy programs afford valuable exposure to the practice of law.
Through our unique partnership with the university’s Croft Institute for International Studies and our summer program at Cambridge University, our students may now achieve a truly global view of the law. Small classes, an accessible faculty and a diverse student body make The University of Mississippi School of Law a unique choice.
We think you will find Oxford’s culture-rich lifestyle and the law school’s excellent, yet affordable, academic program to be an irresistible combination.
