High School Mathematics Tournament

Participation
Participants must be currently in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade.  Teams, as designated by the school, are limited to four students but may have fewer than four members; however, teams of four students are strongly encouraged.  Schools with fewer than four participating students may join with another school or schools to form a student team.

The Tournament
The tournament will consist of the following two parts: an individual round and a team round. Both rounds will be written, and no calculators will be allowed.

Individual Round
The individual round will be conducted in the morning session.  It will include no more than thirty multiple choice questions.  These problems will cover material from high school courses such as algebra, trigonometry, and geometry but no calculus.  No calculators will be allowed.

Team Round
The afternoon’s team problem-solving round will consist of up to ten problems which can be discussed as a team.  Questions in this round will assume a similar background as those in the morning session (algebra, trigonometry, and geometry but no calculus) and will require more problem-solving skills and creative thinking.  Each team will give only one set of solutions.  The correctness as well as the clear presentation of the solutions will be considered in the scoring.  No calculators will be allowed.

Tiebreakers
In the case two papers have the same score, the first team or individual to complete and turn in their work is the winner.
