Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi. We are proud
of our outstanding faculty and strong tradition of scholarship and dedication to teaching. The
Department of Modern Languages offers a B.A. in Chinese, French, German, Linguistics and Spanish. Students
may pursue advanced proficiency in a foreign language through classes taken on the Oxford
campus or through a combination of courses taken on campus and overseas, at one of the university's
study abroad sites. Undergraduate minors can be pursued in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Linguistics,
Russian and Spanish. Information on study abroad programs is available from the Office of Study Abroad. Students wishing more

In addition to the undergraduate offerings, the Department of Modern
Languages offers an M.A. in Modern Languages with specializations in French, German, Spanish and Teaching English as
a Second Language (TESL). The M.A. in Modern Languages with specializations in French, German and Spanish consists of
advanced coursework in the language, literature and culture of the target language. Students with advanced proficiency
in one of these languages may be considered for teaching and/or research assistantships while pursuing their graduate
studies. The M.A. with a specialization in TESL focuses on language teaching pedagogy, linguistics and cross-cultural
pragmatics. More detailed information on these programs of study may be obtained from
Dr. Felice Coles, Director of Graduate Studies, or
Dr. Esim Erdim, Director of the TESL program.
Important New Policy for Fall 2007:
As of Fall 2007, no grade lower than C will be counted in classes students use toward majoring
or minoring in Modern Languages.
