Chinese Language Flagship Program for Undergraduates at The University
of Mississippi:
Achieve Superior Proficiency in Chinese
Undergraduate students at The University of Mississippi can
now benefit from a federally-funded intensive language
training program designed to help students achieve Superior
proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (Superior/3+ level of proficiency on the ACTFL/U.S.
government scales).
Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is a unique enhancement to a
diverse range of career fields, including business,
engineering, the sciences, economics, international studies,
political science, medicine, and sociology.
The program provides financial aid in the form of
fully-funded tuition, fees and housing expenses for the
initial on-campus summer program and significant subsidies
for study in China in two subsequent summers and for a
capstone year of study.
Who is eligible to apply?
Prior Chinese language experience is not required. Beginning
students will attend an intensive course of instruction in the summer term before their freshman year.
Heritage learners and students who have studied Chinese extensively in high school will begin in the fall semester
and be able to become proficient in the language not only in speaking, but also in writing and reading.
All interested students should apply by the priority deadline of February 1, 2009 for full consideration.
(Applications received subsequently will be treated on a space available basis.)
The Language Flagship Program
The Language Flagship Program is sponsored by the National Security Education Program and designed to increase the
nation's inventory of professionals and experts in diverse fields who have Superior/3 level command of Mandarin and of
other critical languages.
