    Alabama-Mississippi Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

    The Modern Languages department at the University of Mississippi proudly announces that the 2010 AMTESOL Conference will be held at the Inn at Ole Miss, on January 29-30, 2010, in Oxford, MS.

    If your field is English as a Second Language in K-12, Higher Education, Intensive English Programs, Bilingual Education and other related fields, you cannot afford to miss this year's conference.

    Meet the Speakers:

    Keynote Speaker - Dr. Bonny Norton
    Professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, University of British Columbia, Canada. Her award-winning research addresses identity, language learning, critical literacy, and international development. Her website can be found at

    Workshop Presenter 1 - Diane Carter
    Diane Carter teaches ESL at two high schools for Indianapolis Public Schools in Indianapolis, IN, USA. She has worked with ESL students in K-12 for over 20 years. Additionally, she authored and taught a speech class for international students at the university level, taught and supervised an adult ESL program for learners in the workplace, taught ESL composition, listening, speaking, and reading comprehension on the university level, taught an ESL methods class for undergrad and grad students, and is a part-time lecturer of technical communication in courses that include many international students for the School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis. Diane is the Convention Program Chairperson for TESOL 2010 in Boston, was the Associate-Chair for TESOL 2007 and served as team leader for Protocol and Job Marketplace for TESOL’s annual conventions for five years. She is particularly proud of her many high school students who graduated with honors and are going on to be successful at the university level. She enjoys putting on workshops for teachers modeling inter-active strategies and making desserts, fruit liqueurs and chocolates.

    Workshop Presenter 2 - Dr. Susan Spezzini
    Dr. Susan Spezzini is an Assistant Professor of ELL and teaches at UAB's ESL Teacher Education program. She has given presentations at over 60 conferences (in 18 states and 5 countries) and has conducted professional development workshops for over 3,000 educators in Alabama, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Before coming to UAB, she was a teacher educator in Paraguay for 20 years. After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer, she taught linguistics at Paraguay's National University, English at a language institute associated with the British Council, and Spanish as a Second Language at the American School of Asunción where she also served as Curriculum and Professional Development Coordinator. Her research activities focus on how mainstream teachers learn to implement ESL Best Practices.
