The past two years as a sixth grade writing teacher at Byhalia Middle School have been a process of drafting lessons, management plans, and teaching personas that I am continually evaluating and revising. My story is one of many post-it note brainstorms, crumpled up drafts, dreamy scribbles, and yes, at times writer’s block. At the core of these revisions have been the questions: How do I get kids excited about writing? How can I help them view and use writing not just as an assignment but as a natural expression of their thoughts and feelings? What tools can I give them to process and route their thinking rather than just teaching a specific skill from the curriculum?

Follow me through two years of drafts, revisions, and reflections.
