Audition Procedures:

All students interested in auditioning for a vocal or choral scholarship including partial out-of-state tuition waivers will have to audition. There are two categories of auditioning for the choral/vocal program at the University of Mississippi. The first category is vocal music majors/minors and the second category is non-music majors/minors. All students will audition with the choral faculty. Those students who are vocal music majors/minors will audition for the voice faculty as well.

... for all students auditioning: Write a one page narrative (Narrative Form) describing your background in choral/vocal music including the choirs you have participated in, the honor choirs or all-state choirs you were a member of, and the instruments you play (if any) and the number of years of study. Also include the name of your high school, your choral director's name, and your private voice teachers. In addition, please include your outside interests and hobbies. You may also complete the Information Form to bring with you to your audition. If you have a music resume, please bring this to your audition as well. Recommendation letters are optional.

... for Music Majors and Music Minors: Music majors should prepare and perform two vocal selections of contrasting character. Transfer students, who will be music majors, are expected to sing two contrasting pieces, with at least one in a language other than English. Music minors should prepare and perform one vocal selection. (If you have been taking private voice lessons, you might want to bring a repertoire list at the time of the audition.) It is suggested that you select repertoire that best demonstrates your vocal range, quality and musicality. (Please do not bring choral music to perform, unless you are singing a solo from a larger work.) An accompanist will be provided. You will have time to prepare and practice prior to your audition. The choral and voice faculty will be present for your audition. Following the audition, you will be asked to take a diagnostic theory and sight-singing test.

... for Non-Music Majors (students pursuing any degree other than music and planning to sing in choir): The choral faculty will ask you to vocalize. Performing one vocal selection that best demonstrates your vocal range, quality and musicality is optional. Should you need an accompanist, one will be provided for your audition, but please let us know in advance. (Please do not bring choral music to perform, unless you are singing a solo from a larger work.) You may also be asked to take a sight-singing test.
