Undergraduate Degrees

The University of Mississippi offers an extensive range of degrees in music which prepare students for a variety of careers in the music profession while ensuring a strong liberal arts education. The University is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

NOTE: Beginning in 2007, there are important changes in the bachelor of music and bachelor of arts programs. These are incorporated in the current Student Handbook, above, and are also summarized in the Chair's introduction [PDF] to the recent changes.

The Bachelor of Music degree is an intensive professional degree program preparing students to enter a career in music or to enter graduate school for advanced study. The University of Mississippi offers the Bachelor of Music degree with the following emphases: 1) performance (applied music) in voice, piano, and most instruments, 2) music theory, and 3) music education.

The Bachelor of Arts in Music is a degree which allows for more extensive study in general education and related fields. The Bachelor of Arts is the degree of choice for students who wish to emphasize music at the undergraduate level before entering a professional school as a graduate students, for those who plan graduate study in one of the scholarly fields within music, or for those who wish to combine music and another field (such as business) by electing the second field as a minor.
