University Orchestra

Membership

The University Orchestra is made up of faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students from many departments of the campus. Membership is by audition. String performers usually audition during the spring semester for the next academic year. Auditions for wind instrumentalists are held during the registration period of each semester.

Program

Regular rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Wednesday evenings during the fall and spring semesters. Preliminary rehearsals for strings are held during the registration period of each semester. Concerts for full symphony orchestra are given on the University campus each semester in addition to the Fall String Festival. The string orchestra, with a selected number of other instrumentalists, are frequently invited to perform off-campus on community performing arts series, at high school and college campuses, and for music conferences and other special events. Since there are many academically excellent students in a variety of disciplines in the orchestra, performances are scheduled to minimize class conflicts.

Scholarships

University Orchestra scholarships are available by audition to qualified string instrumentalists, regardless of major field of study. Auditions are arranged by appointment at the mutual convenience of the prospective student and the Department of Music faculty. Audition material should include selections that demonstrate the performer's ability to best advantage, preferably in both lyrical and technical passages. Total duration should be 10-15 minutes. Call or write the Department of Music to arrange an audition date and time, as well as campus tours and other informative activities. Although personal visits are encouraged, auditions may be made through tape recordings.
