NARRATIVE

Dr. Frank E. Barber heads up the Biomedical Acoustics program at NCPA.   He joined the Center in April 2004, with an appointment as Senior Scientist.   The principal focus of his research at NCPA is the development of high intensity focused ultrasound for noninvasive diagnosis and treatment of internal hemorrhage in combat casualty care.

A purebred Vermonter, Dr. Barber graduated from nearby Dartmouth College in 1966 and earned a

Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1969.   He completed his Doctoral Degree at the University of Washington in 1976, also in Electrical Engineering.

His research accomplishments include the first accurate measurements of the acoustic properties of hard dental tissues at the Forsyth Dental Research Institute, Boston.   While at the University of Washington he was employed by the Center for Bioengineering where he pioneered (and coined the term for) the first duplex echo-Doppler ultrasound scanner.   Upon completion of his doctoral degree, he started a research program in medical ultrasound physics as Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.   The focus of the group was development of high-resolution diffraction imaging in tissues.   The medical fields to which his work was primarily directed were peripheral vascular disease and breast cancer, and he was recipient of a 5-year Research Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute.   Other positions include Director of Engineering and R&D for two medical instrument companies, and Senior Technology Analyst for the Medical Devices Division of Pfizer, Inc., for their headquarters group in New York.

Dr. Barber is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Zi.   In 1982, he was elected as the National (Distinguished) Lecturer for the IEEE Ultrasonics (UFFC) Society.   He has over 50 publications; has served as consultant to over 25 national and international corporations; and has served on boards and committees of several professional societies.   He and his wife, Debbie, live in Oxford, MS.   He has a daughter and grandson living in Apache Junction, AZ, and a second daughter in Telluride, CO.
