| NCPA’s work in vibrometry began and has been used extensively in its landmine detection program. Beginning with single-beam, single measurement point laser Doppler vibrometers (LDVs) and moving to scanning LDVs, and then multiple-beam vibrometers, NCPA has worked with LDV developers, such as MetroLaser, Inc. and Polytec PI, to push the state of the art to obtain global measurements of an area quickly, to advance signal processing algorithms, and to measure smaller vibration amplitudes. The results of these efforts have been proven in the landmine detection program in outdoor tests under adverse conditions. Development of a workable ultrasonic Doppler vibrometer having comparable performance to LDVs also began on this program.
