| Particle Image Velocimetry
(PIV) is a laser-based technique that uses the particle displacement between
injected particulates in the flowfield and the time separation between
two contiguous laser light sheets to statistically determine the velocity
field. In this picture, Dr. Ukeiley is observing the sheet alignment during
the initial PIV setup stage where the particulate is emanating from the
Single Lobe Rig at a very low velocity. The laser used is a 15 Hz, 125
mJ per pulse, Nd-YAG capable of dual pulse separation times >= 2ms.
The particulate is 0.3 micron Alumina. The PIV system at located at The National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) will be used to determine the mean and fluctuating three-dimensional flowfield associated with supersonic jets of various applications. Two complete three-dimensional systems are available at the NCPA thereby permitting the measurement of velocity correlations in time. |
