Early NFSMI visionaries conceived of the Archives as an area to house historical documents relating to the history of Child Nutrition Programs. Mrs. Thelma Flanagan's collection of early school lunch program documents dating to the beginning of the National School Lunch Program were the first papers donated to the NFSMI Archives. They were followed by the collection of Mrs. Ruth Moskovitz, Mrs. Eleanor Pratt, and Mr. Marshall Matz.
In addition to manuscripts and collections from generous donors, the NFSMI Archives contains documents related to and produced by the National Food Service Management Institute since its inception.
The NFSMI Archives Room is designed to accommodate up to 4320 volumes on compact shelving with the potential for expansion. The adjoining workroom provides storage and work spaces to organize large collections. Study carrells are wired to allow researchers to use their laptop computers or audio-visual equipment.
