Dr. E. F. Gene Fiese, Ph.D, 2007 AAPS President

and

Mr. Jeb Harter, Public Outreach Specialist, AAPS

They are going to visit us, the AAPS-UM Student Chapter, Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Mississippi on October, 26, 2007. Dr Fiese would be talking about " General Pharmaceutics - The New Physical Pharmacy "

Eugene Fiese is the 2007 President of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). His area of expertise is in drug development, specifically in analytical chemistry, drug absorption, and preformulation.

During his 30 year tenure at Pfizer, Inc., Dr. Fiese coordinated the evaluation of all new pharmaceutical chemical agents entering development from 15 therapeutic areas, screening for solubility, stability, and absorption properties affecting rapid development. Committed to education, Dr. Fiese served as a visiting lecturer to universities across the nation for more than 30 years – most recently with an AAPS-sponsored short course titled “Physical and Chemical Characterization of Drug Substances in the Pharmaceutical Industry.” He also helped to increase the quality and quantity of graduate students in schools of pharmacy as Chair of the AAPS Education and Graduate Education and Research Committees. His research has been published multiple times, and has been extremely active in AAPS leadership roles for several years. Dr. Fiese received a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He graduated with a B.S. in Pharmacy and an M.S. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin.

Present Activities: 2006 – till date

  1. A welcome picnic was organized on November 12, 2006 for the chapter members and their families.
  2. The AAPS-University of Mississippi Student chapter committee members had general body meetings twice every semester to discuss the issues related to the activities, performance, progress and development of the Chapter.
  3. The Chapter members had the opportunity of listening to two Web Conferences on “High performance liquid chromatography – its selection and developments” one in November 2006 and other in January 2007.
  4. Dr. Ho-Wook Jun, Assistant Professor in Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Alabama at Birmingham, delivered a seminar on “Biomimetic Self-assembled Nanofibers for Nanostructured Tissue Engineering” on April 27, 2007. Dr. Jun’s seminar focused on various critical issues relating to tissue regeneration utilizing nanofibers produced from natural and synthetic polymers. The seminar was followed by a refreshment session where Dr. Jun and students interacted and had an informal discussion on professional development.
  5. Dr. Sek Wen Hui, senior biophysicist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute for over 20 years and has worked extensively on drug and gene delivery techniques. Dr. Hui is also an adjunct Professor at State University of NY, Buffalo, delivered a seminar on “Breaking the Barrier: Physical Methods to Deliver Drugs and Genes” on May 3, 2007. Dr. Hui’s seminar focused on transdermal drug delivery system. Sseveral issues related to the drug and gene delivery by breaking the barriers utilizing electroporation technique and liposomal targeting have been addressed. The seminar was followed by a luncheon where Dr. Hui and graduate students interacted and had an informal discussion on scientific and professional development.
  6. The Chapter members also had an opportunity to attend a PDD webinar on “Zen and the Art of Pre-formulation Science” in the month of May 2007.
  7. An early Fall barbecue picnic was organized at Chevalla lake, MS on September 8, 2007 for the chapter members and their families. We had great food and fun as you can see in the pictures page.

  3. Dr. Edmund Elder, Director of Global Pharmaceutical Development, Dow Chemical Company, delivered a seminar onParticle Engineering Approaches to Drug Delivery for Enhanced Product Performance” on January 30, 2006. Dr. Elder’s seminar focused on the various critical issues relating to poor solubility of drugs and the particle engineering approaches that can be employed to enhance product performance. The seminar was followed by a Luncheon where Dr. Elder and students engaged in an informal discussion on scientific and professional development.
  4. Dr. Edmund Elder also presented a talk to the undergraduate students on the ‘Opportunities for BS and Pharm.D Graduates in Pharmaceutical Industry, Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Graduate studies’ on the same day.
