Philosophy Field Day |
![]() |
Some of our graduate students who have young children noted that elementary schools have field days on the last day of class since nothing academic can be accomplished at the end of the term. Accordingly, it was suggested that as our semester comes to an end, we also should have a philosophy field day. Here are some of the events that were suggested by our graduate students.
| All Solipsists will be invited to play solitaire (isolated locations, of course). | |
| Pythagorean musical chairs--the chairs are arranged in the form of a triangle and each contestant must grab a chair when the harmony stops. | |
| The game "20 Questions" will be hosted by Socrates. | |
| "Eat the Mean"--Aristotelian hot dog eating contest where each contest is only required to eat his or her mean amount of hot dogs. | |
| There will be a confessional booth set up for those who do not display proper sportsmanship. (Augustine will man this booth.) | |
| While waiting for the other events one can enter into Ockham's barber shop for a close shave. | |
| Cartesian tug of war between two teams labeled "Mind" and "Body." | |
| Everyone will enjoy the Leibnizian-monad-in-the-spoon relay race. | |
| Kantian walking race--A course will be laid out duplicating the distance of Kant's daily walk in Konigsberg. The winner is the one who hits the exact times of each landmark of Kant's legendary walk. | |
| Hegelian three-legged race. | |
| For those who like to take risks there will be a contest in Kierkegaardian cliff jumping. | |
| The winner of the Nietzschean One-Man Arm Wrestling Contest will be the one who can best overcome himself. | |
| There will be the John Stuart Mill hot oil rubbing contest, where you get to decide the amount of pleasure and pain for everyone else. | |
| Wittgensteinian two-man building contest--(only the terms "block," "pillar," "slab," "beam" may be used by the contestants). | |
| For those interested in language-games, Wittgenstein will be hosting a game of Scrabble. For those who prefer Wittgenstein's Tractatus, we will be hosting a game of Pictionary and a ladder tossing contest. | |
| The Existentialists will host a game of "Trivial Pursuit" between competing teams of analytic philosophers. | |
| Don't miss Putnam's Hall of Mirrors where everyone can contemplate their duplicate. | |
| Logicians will be urged to join bobsled teams as they traverse the slippery slope. | |
| Finally, the day will end with game of poker with both Wittgenstein and Popper sitting at the table. |
