PHILOSOPHY/LINGUISTICS 103 Logic: Critical Thinking Principles and methods of sound reasoning, emphasizing analysis of everyday arguments. (Staff)
PHILOSOPHY 301 History of Philosophy I Major philosophers from the Pre-Socratics through the Medieval Period. (Skultety)
PHILOSOPHY/RELIGION 309 Asian Philosophy Examination of Asian thought in the Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian traditions. (Cozad)
PHILOSOPHY 318 Existentialism Development of existential themes from Kierkegaard through Sartre, and in recent existential theology and psychology. (Lawhead)
PHILOSOPHY/LINGUISTICS 319 Symbolic Logic Formal techniques for the representation and analysis (syntactic, semantic and metatheoretic) of logical principles, arguments and systems. A comprehensive survey of deductive symbolic logic. Topics covered include propositional logic, quantificational logic, and modal logic. (Manson)
PHILOSOPHY 321/ 621 Ethics Introduction to ethical theory, from the classical period to the present. (Westmoreland)
PHILOSOPHY 322 Epistemology Introduction to the theory of knowledge, its nature, limits, and conditions. (Barnard)
PHILOSOPHY 328 Biomedical Ethics This course will explore ethical issues in contemporary medicine such as abortion, euthanasia, the patient's "right to know" about his or her condition and treatment, moral issues in the allocation of scarce medical resources, the issues surrounding "socialized medicine" including the question whether each person has a right to a certain level of medical care, the trend toward treating conditions that used to be considered manifestations of moral flaws as diseases (e.g., alcoholism). PHILOSOPHY 609 Studies in Existential Philosophy Basic works and themes in existentialism, centering in the fundamental philosophical questions as they are raised in Hebrew and Greek thought, synthesized in Christian thought, and examined by the existentialist philosophers. (Lawhead)
PHILOSOPHY 616 Research: Philosophy of Science Survey of philosophical issues in scientific theory and practice, including the nature of scientific method and explanation. (Manson)
PHILOSOPHY 619 Value Theory: Medical Ethics An examination of the nature and purpose of values in classical and contemporary thought. Focus on issues in Medical Ethics. (Westmoreland)
PHILOSOPHY 617 Problems in Epistemology Selected issues in theories of knowledge. Specific topics may include: the nature of knowledge, the nature of epistemic justification, the structure of epistemic justification, the nature of a priori knowledge, naturalized epistemology, feminist epistemology, and skepticism. PHILOSOPHY 621 Problems in Ethics Selected issues in ethical theory. (Westmoreland)
PHILOSOPHY/LINGUISTICS 655 Advanced Symbolic Logic Symbolic techniques used in formalizing the basic logical principles and in constructing rigorous proofs and demonstrations. (Manson)
