GENERAL MAINTENANCE SHOP
The General Maintenance shop is online from 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday
Our General Maintenance shop is composed of four-person teams divided into six areas over the entire campus. Our teams take care of general electrical problems such as repair or replacement of tubes, bulbs, ballasts, switches, receptacles, breakers, motors, and hoods, as well as small circuits and small runs of conduit. We also take care of painting of rooms or touchups, repair of sheet rock walls, replacement of windows or glass, and small foundation repair. In the area of plumbing, we take care of all locates and all repair and replacement of urinals, commodes, sinks, bathtubs, showers, faucets, lab sinks, drains, and air lines, as well as any repairs made on the branch lines. In HVAC, we take care of valves, filter changes, and some light HVAC repairs, as well as the repair and replacement of window units.
Our General Maintenance shop can also do special projects, from building an office from the ground up, to driving our guests around during special events such as graduation and football games. Our teams are the first line of customer service, and we are dedicated to giving our very best at all times. Our teams can also do small renovations and can usually get them done under a time crunch. Our general maintenance teams' attention to detail and customer service make us a good fit at the University of Mississippi.
NIGHT MAINTENANCE SHOP (Preventative Maintenance)
The Night Maintenance shop is online from 3:30pm to 12:00 midnight, Monday through Friday.
Our Night Maintenance teams do everything that the General Maintenance teams listed above do, plus they do all the preventative maintenance on our equipment, such as taking care of air handlers, cleaning and changing the belts, testing all of the backflow devices on campus, and replacing the devices if they prove to be in need of it, as well as checking, repairing, and changing all of the outside lighting on campus. Night Maintenance also takes care of all HVAC problems that may occur at night, as well as the energy management schedule changes.
Night Maintenance teams are responsive to the customer's needs. They are composed of self starters and high-end individuals who pride themselves on being the best that they can be. The night teams also handle emergency setups of meetings and concerts at night. The night teams also teach our apprentices part of their training program. Willingly sharing their knowledge with our apprentices gives everyone a feeling of accomplishment.
APPRENTICE PROGRAM
The Apprentice Program is online from 7:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Apprentices are chosen from the Grounds and Custodial sites in order to give these individuals an opportunity to move into a skilled craft trade. After a careful selection process, these incredible people are chosen to be admitted into our apprentice program.
Starting at an apprentice level, they are taught by supervisors who are highly skilled in their trade. The apprentices are taught HVAC, Paint, Sheet Rock, Plumbing, Carpentry, Cement, Concrete, and Electrical classes. The apprentices are required to read lessons, use simulation boards, do homework, stand and present lessons, take and pass both written and hands-on tests, and do some shift changes in order to work with the Night Teams.
Apprentices are the foundation of our customer service values for the future. Trained by both night and day teams, these personnel are our first line of defense in our quest for excellent customer service. All of our teams at the Physical plant are very proud of the opportunities that we have been given. When you are on our campus and you meet one of our Team members, you will notice the difference that their dedication and training have made.
PLUMBING and GAS SHOP
The Plumbing and Gas shops are online from 7:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
The plumbing and gas divisions are run with the help of the general maintenance teams. They include a Master Plumber and Master Gas person. The Plumbing shop handles all major breaks in water lines, as well as sewer line repair or replacement. These areas also take care of contractor requests, including locates and services.
The Natural Gas portion of our program handles locates and all federally regulated items that deal with gas. We are proud to have gas personnel with 30 years of experience in the field. Both the Plumbing shop and the Gas shop teach our apprentices these valuable trades.
ELECTRICAL SERVICES
Electrical Services is online from 7:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Electrical Services teaches our apprentices this important trade, and they handle all of the electrical below 600 volts. The Electrical Services division takes care of main lines and major renovations, as well as any problems that the General Maintenance shops need to upgrade to them. Electrical Services replaces and repairs panels, distributions, main lines, and emergency gear. If it's foul weather or the aftermath of an emergency, our Electrical Service teams will be there.
Electrical Services also hooks up concerts, from the latest band to the greatest symphonies. Portable generators for special events such as football, baseball, basketball, tennis and graduation fall under this division. All functions that require public address systems are taken care of by Electrical Services. Even though their official hours are 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday, you will find one of our highly skilled and trained electricians at every major event the campus produces. Their dedication to the trade truly lights up Ole Miss.
