SHOP PERSONNEL:
The Physical Plant Department is in the business of providing great customer service to a great public university. As a representative of the Physical Plant Department, each employee is expected to present an appearance that is pleasing and acceptable to everyone with whom contact is made.
The Physical Plant Department provides uniforms for all shop employees. This policy applies to all Physical Plant Department employees who are required to wear a uniform as part of their job. Benefits of uniforms are safety, professional appearance as well as financial savings to the employee.
Uniform items may include shirt, smock, pants, skirt, jacket, cap, Physical Plant badge, belt, keys and radio. It is the supervisor's responsibility to ensure all uniforms are properly sized ensuring professional appearance and safety (e.g. pants too baggy or too long, clothing too tight fitting, skirts too short, shirts unbuttoned, etc).
Uniforms are to be worn to present a professional appearance. Shirts are to be tucked in, shoe strings are to be properly tied, and a belt with radio and keys are to be properly secured. The wearing of shorts is not permitted. No open toed or heel shoes are permitted. Som employees may be required to wear additional safety gear including but not limited to steel toe boots and fire retardant shirts. Rain and winter gear are stocked in the Storeroom and may be checked out by the employee.
Employees are required to be in proper uniform before clocking in to begin the shift. Employees may not change out of their uniform until after they have clocked out at the end of the shift. Uniforms are to be worn only when working at the University. Physical Plant uniforms may not be worn when working a second job.
Jewelry may not be worn in areas where safety is at risk (e.g. necklaces and earrings that dangle). Jewelry exceptions for all employees are wedding rings, stud earrings, and/or a watch. Items displaying profanity or any language of disrespect for others will not be tolerated on clothing or as body art. Body art that may be offensive to others must remain covered at all times. Body piercing jewelry, other than stud earrings, is not permitted.
Each employee has the option of having the uniform company laundry uniforms. If the employee chooses to laundry his or her own uniform, it is the employee's responsibility to ensure uniforms are properly cleaned, pressed, and neat in appearance.
Upgrade or replacement of uniforms due to fading, normal wear, or size change are at no cost to the employee. Replacement of uniform due to abuse of a garment may be at the expense of the employee.
Lost or missing uniform items are to be reported to the employee's supervisor immediately who in turn notifies via email the Unit Assistant Director, Physical Plant Accountant and Assistant Director of Physical Plant Human Resources.
Upon separation of employee employment the employee's supervisor is required to complete proper documentation of returned uniform items including but not limited to Physical Plant ID badge or badges, radio and keys. Cost of items not returned will be deducted from the employee's final pay check.
Violation of uniform policy may result in disciplinary action.
