| Departmental AwardsSince 1997, the department has annually presented awards to the most outstanding junior and senior political science majors. Past recipients of these awards are:
In addition to these awards, the university endows the William Jennings Bryan Medal; the course catalog describes the award as follows: In 1898 William Jennings Bryan donated to the University a sum to be invested, the interest from which should be used each year in awarding a medal to that student who may present the best essay or oration on the science of government. The rules governing the award of this medal are on file in the Chancellor's Office. The last recipient of the medal was former governor Ray Mabus, at the time an undergraduate student of the university, who was awarded the medal in 1968. Other AwardsOutstanding former students in the department have received prestigious scholarships for study in graduate and professional schools. Outstanding current students are eligible for a variety of academic scholarships offered by the university, as well as induction into honorary societies such as the Mississippi Beta chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key, and Pi Sigma Alpha.
