What is the Psychological Services Center?

The Psychological Services Center is a behavioral health clinic that serves University of Mississippi undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff and their children, and residents of Oxford and surrounding communities.

The staff consists of a clinical manager, about twenty therapists who are advanced doctoral students in Clinical Psychology, and seven Clinical Psychologists who closely supervise all services.
The graduate student therapists are well qualified to deliver service as evidenced by the fact that, during their training here, many are hired as therapists at mental health centers in Oxford, Grenada, and Tupelo, and at the North Mississippi Medical Center's Psychology Clinic in Tupelo. They also consult to organizations, such as Rape Crisis Services, Oxford City Schools, and Baptist Childrens' Village.
The services address family, relationship, and self-concept problems as well as for problems that can be more severe, such as depression, drug use, panic attacks and agoraphobia, and current and past sexual assault.
Department faculty and doctoral students conduct and publish research in such areas as eating disorders, anxiety disorders, drugs and alcohol, sexual assault, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, childrens' social relationships, and psychological tests. This research provides the basis for delivering 'state of the art' mental health services. Staff know what approaches work best and what approaches do not work at all.
The PSC is operated by the Clinical Psychology program of the University of Mississippi. The Department of Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association.

Do I have to schedule an appointment by phone?

The Psychological Services Center does have students available for screenings (initial sessions) at various times during the week, and walk-ins are welcome. However, scheduling appointments by phone is preferred to reduce your wait time and to insure that we have someone available to meet with you. To schedule an appointment, please call (662) 915-7385 during the hours of 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

What is confidentiality?

With limited exceptions, all contacts with the Psychological Services Clinic are confidential. That means that no information about clients is released without either a client's written consent or a valid Court order, except in cases of physical violence or child abuse. Information about clients is protected under the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act or HIPAA. You will be provided with further information at your first appointment.

What is the cost of therapy?

In order to maintain the clinic, the PSC charges fees for services on a sliding fee scale based on household income. However, as direct service delivery is one of the main goals of the PSC, no one will be turned away based upon his or her ability to pay. Faculty, Staff, and Students of the university receive their first 8 sessions at no cost. Additionally, the initial screening is free for all clients. You will be provided with information regarding the exact amount of continued services at your first appointment.
