Procedures for Use of Animals in Research and Teaching


DOs [Requirements]
  1. Submit an Animal Study Protocol Application form for all research and teaching using living vertebrates. (PL 99-198; PL 99-158) (PHS Policy IV,C; AWAR §2.31, d)
  2. Submit the appropriate form to the IACUC Coordinator if you use dead vertebrate animals for teaching or research. The Preserved Animal Form can be found at the web address listed above. (AWAR §1.1, Animal; AWA §2132,g)
  3. Submit protocols regardless of funding source and location of research. (Silverman, Suckow, & Murthy, 2000) (NIH/OPRR interpretation of the PHS Policy II)
  4. Submit protocols in the name of the faculty member. (AWAR §2.31,c,6; PHS Policy IV,B,6)
  5. Complete species specific, safety and animal care training for PI/students/technical staff as part of the protocol submission process. Protocols cannot be approved until training has occurred. (PHS Policy IV,C,1,f; AWAR §2.32)
  6. Submit Occupational Health Evaluation and OHSP Risk Inventory forms for review and preventive health recommendations. (Silverman et al., 2000; PHS Policy IV,A,1,f)
  7. Submit ANY protocol changes to the IACUC. Minor changes may only require documentation and approval while significant changes may require IACUC review. Some examples of significant changes are: “A change in the overall aims or objectives of the study; a change which may involve an increase in the levels of pain, distress, and/or discomfort; a change from non-surgery to surgery, from minor to major surgery, from non-survival to survival surgery, or from single to multiple survival surgery; a change in the species of animals used; the addition of the use of hazardous agents in animal procedures” (NIH Animal Care and Use Committee, 1992); or an increase (>10%) in the approximate number of animals used.   8. Submit annual progress reports. (AWAR §2.31,d,5; PHS Policy IV,C,5)
  9. Submit a new application after three years have elapsed for all species. (PHS Policy IV,C,1 — VI,C,4)
  10. Post whistle-blower information in your laboratory in the event that students, technicians, or other personnel have concerns regarding animal welfare. This information can be downloaded from the IACUC website at http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/research/compliance/animal_reporting.html. (AWAR §2.32,c,4; PHS Policy IV,B,4)
  11. Post emergency procedures flyer in your laboratory in case of an unexpected occurrence that may threaten the safety of your laboratory animals. ( PHS Policy IV, A, 1, f)
  12. Post SOP for animal care in your laboratory. (PHS Policy IV, C, 1, d, and e; AWAR §2.31, d, 1,vi, and vii)
  13. Post expiration date for the protocol. (PHS Policy IV, D, a-e; AWAR §2.35, a, 2, and 3)
DON’Ts
  1. Don’t begin research before receiving either an e-mailed approval or approval letter. (AWAR §2.31; PHS II; PHS Policy IV, B, 6)
  2. Don’t order animals before the protocol is approved. (Silverman et al., 2000)
