Animal Research ~ Information for New Investigators and Research Personnel  

1. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE UM ANIMAL CARE AND USE PROGRAM.

The Animal Research page on the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) website has a menu from which you can choose. Find out about the UM Animal Welfare Assurance, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and protocol review procedures, etc., at this site.

2. READ:

• The University of Mississippi Lab Animal Care and Use Manual. The Manual provides you with information regarding federal policy and regulations and UM and IACUC policy and procedures for lab animal research.

• Review Procedures
• UM Vivarium DOs and DON’Ts

3. CONTACT THE ATTENDING VETERINARIAN.

Dr. Harry Fyke is the Attending Veterinarian and can be reached at B104 NCNPR, 915-5324 or hfyke@olemiss.edu. Introduce yourself to him and arrange a tour of the UM Vivarium in the Thad Cochran Research Center.

4. GET TRAINED.

• Complete Health and Safety training (biological, chemical, pathogen, radiation, etc.). Contact Health and Safety at 915-5433 for information about training requirements and procedures for setting up training. For more detailed information click on Health and Safety to be directed to their website.

5. SUBMIT HEALTH FORMS.

Complete and submit to Dr. Fyke (B104 NCNPR) the Occupational Health Evaluation and OHSP Risk Inventory forms. You can complete these two forms and fax them to 915-7577 or mail them to:

The IACUC office is located at 100 Barr Hall next to the Lyceum on the Circle. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs central telephone number is 915-7482. You can call this number and be directed to any ORSP staff.
