Human Subjects Research ~ Education and Training

CITI (Collaborative IRB Training Initiative)

All faculty, students, and staff who have contact with human subjects or human subject data must receive training in the protection of human subjects. IRB applications will be accepted only when all project staff have completed this education requirement.

Instructions for registering can be found at http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/research/compliance/human/human_CITI_readfirst.html.

This online educational program is sponsored by the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) and the University of Miami. The CITI program was developed by national IRB experts and covers several aspects of bioethics and human subject research in a module format. Each module has educational material that can be read on screen or printed, and a brief online test. The basic cluster of CITI modules takes about 3-6 hours to complete. You can do each module separately – you do not have to complete the entire program in one sitting. When you have finished the course, you will be instructed on how to print or download a Course Completion Report (certificate of completion).

CITI certification is good for two years. On or before your two-year anniversary date, you must complete a CITI Refresher course. Information about Refresher courses can be found on the CITI website.

NIH Education Requirement

NIH requires education on the protection of human research participants for all investigators submitting NIH applications for grants or proposals for contracts, and those receiving new or non-competing awards for research involving human subjects.

As documentation that education has been completed, the NIH requires a letter, signed by an institutional official, which includes the names of the key personnel who are responsible for the design and conduct of the proposed study; the title of the education program completed by each named individual; and a one-sentence description of the program. The timing of submission of documentation is in keeping with just-in-time procedures; that is, the NIH will request this letter documenting education before an award is issued.

The CITI program meets the NIH requirement. Please contact Diane W. Lindley, CITI Training Coordinator, for more information.
