NASA History Division Winter/Spring 2009 Internships

The NASA History Division is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for winter/spring 2009 internships. The History Division maintains archival materials to answer research questions from NASA personnel, journalists, scholars, students at all levels, and others from around the world. The division also edits and publishes several books and monographs each year. It maintains a large number of Web sites on NASA history. Students of all majors are welcome to apply. While detailed prior knowledge of the aeronautics and space fields is not necessary, a keen interest and some basic familiarity with these topics are needed. Strong research, writing and editing skills are essential. Experience with computers, especially HTML formatting, is a plus. Intern projects are flexible. Typical projects include handling a wide variety of information requests, editing historical manuscripts, doing research and writing biographical sketches, updating and creating Web pages, and identifying and captioning photos. NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

NASA's Aeronautics Mission Directorate is currently accepting scholarship applications from undergraduate and graduate students in aeronautics and related fields for the academic year beginning in fall 2009. Twenty undergraduate students in their second year of study will receive up to $15,000 per year for two years and a summer internship at a NASA center with a $10,000 stipend. Five graduate students will receive up to $35,000 per year for three years and two summer internships at a NASA center with $10,000 stipends. All applicants must be U.S. citizens. NASA Undergraduate Student Research Project Summer 2009 Session

NASA’s Undergraduate Student Research Project is currently accepting applications for 10-week summer 2009 internships. These internships offer students the opportunity to work alongside NASA scientists and engineers at NASA's field centers, laboratories and test facilities. Applicants must be rising sophomores, juniors or seniors with a 3.0 GPA. They must have an academic major or course work concentration in engineering, math, computer science, or physical or life sciences. Participants work on practical problems that will be applied in aerospace or on future NASA missions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. National Space Biomedical Research Institute Announces Opportunities for College Students

The National Space Biomedical Research Institute seeks solutions to health concerns facing astronauts on long missions. This research also benefits patients on Earth. The NSBRI has two exciting opportunities for college students on several levels.

Graduate Education Program in Space Life Sciences
The NSBRI-sponsored training program in space life sciences enables students to work toward a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. at Texas A&M Universityand focus their research on space life sciences and fields related to the space initiative. Texas A&M is currently recruiting participants for fall 2009. Students will pursue doctoral degrees in kinesiology, nuclear engineering (health physics) or nutrition, or a M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D. in medical sciences. Application packages are due February. 15, 2009. National Space Biomedical Research Institute Summer Internship Program
The NSBRI’s summer program is for graduate or medical students and undergraduate students who have completed their second year of undergraduate studies. Applicants are asked to send a curriculum vitae or resume, a letter of interest indicating available dates during the summer, and two letters of recommendation. The program is open to U.S. citizens. NCIIA Fall Grants

The National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) has $2 million to award to faculty and students this year. NCIIA funds faculty from member institutions (UM is a member) whose programs and projects encourage innovation and invention among students, and whose work benefits people and the environment. NCIIA funds student “E-Teams” that are taking an idea or technology on the path to commercialization. Applications are due December 5 for:

Powe Junior Faculty Awards

RALPH E. POWE JUNIOR FACULTY ENHANCEMENT AWARDS

UM Internal Deadline January 19, 2009

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) has announced the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award competition for 2009. In the 2008 competition, ORAU received 107 applications and awarded 30 grants. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of junior faculty and result in new funding opportunities.

Full-time assistant professors at ORAU member institutions within two years of their initial tenure track appointment (2/6/2007 through 2/6/2009) at the time of application are eligible to be nominated by their institution. The research project must be in one of the following five disciplines: Engineering and Applied Science; Life Sciences; Mathematics/Computer Sciences; Physical Sciences; Policy, Management, or Education.

UM is limited to two nominations for this program. In order to be considered for nomination you must follow the instructions given at the following web site: http://www.orau.org/consortium/programs/powe/powe-awards.htm. Submit your three documents via email attachment to Mickey McLaurin (mclaurin@olemiss.edu) before 5:00 p.m. on January 19, 2009. Potential nominees should also confirm that their department chair or dean has sent the required letter of recommendation (in Word or WordPerfect format) via email attachment to Mickey McLaurin before the January 19 internal deadline. These letters should be addressed to Dr. Alice M. Clark, Vice Chancellor for Research and Sponsored Programs, University of Mississippi.

All application materials will be reviewed, UM nominees will be selected, and prospective applicants will be contacted by the ORSP prior to the February 6 ORAU deadline. CDC Summer Internships for Undergraduates

Undergraduate summer fellowships are available at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) in Atlanta, GA. This fellowship is open to undergraduate students who plan to major in chemistry or biology and have taken courses in general chemistry or biology. The candidate will work on projects associated with developing and applying new methods to characterize and quantitate biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases. This includes assessing a variety of markers in biologic specimens (such as serum or urine) and developing reference materials. The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team and will work with state-of-the-art equipment on topics relevant to public health. DLS offers a stimulating environment that enables summer Fellows to learn about applied analytical chemistry and to enhance their knowledge of public health. The stipend for first time, full-time summer Fellows is $2,100/month and the deadline for application is January 16, 2009. Postdoctoral Fellowships at NASA

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) offers approximately 60 postdoctoral fellowships annually. The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly talented national and international scientists and engineers to engage in ongoing NASA research in Aeronautics, Astrobiology, Astrophysics, Earth Science, Exploration Systems, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, and Space Operations.

  • Approximately 60 fellowships awarded annually
  • One-year appointments, renewable up to three years
  • Annual stipends start at $50,000, with supplements for certain degree fields and high cost-of-living areas
  • Annual travel budget of $8,000

Nominations Sought: 2009 AACR Scientific Achievement Awards

The American Association for Cancer Research is seeking nominations for the 2009 AACR Scientific Achievement Awards.  The AACR recognizes cancer research achievements through an array of prestigious and distinguished scientific awards. The AACR is actively seeking nominations for awards honoring achievements in basic, clinical and translational research, epidemiology and prevention and accomplishments of young investigators, women and minorities. By nominating a colleague you can honor their significant contributions and potentially shape the scientific content of the 2009 Annual Meeting.  Each Award recipient will present a major lecture during the 2009 AACR Annual Meeting, which will be held on April 18-22, 2009 in Denver, CO.  For more information, please see AACR Awards.
