Roundtable Mentoring and Student Retention: What Women Need to Know to Survive and Succeed in STEM Careers

Program Basics:

Representation of women in STEM careers is disproportionate to the number of women entering undergraduate studies in STEM fields. Female representation falls precipitously as females move through training and career pipeline. The University of Mississippi female science faculty and the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies propose a roundtable program to address women retention in STEM.

This series is sponsored by the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies. It is funded by a grant from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Campus Action Program, “Breaking through Barriers in STEM for Women and Girls,” matched by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the College of Liberal Arts. The principal investigators are Dr. Warigia Bowman, Assistant Professor, Public Policy Leadership, and Dr. Tamar Goulet, Associate Professor, Department of Biology.

The Goals:

Enhance camaraderie among female STEM students
Provide informal mentoring between faculty and students
Facilitate discussion of difficult issues that may preclude a student from remaining in a STEM discipline
Start a student affiliate chapter of the AAUW

Two options for parking
(1): Before the forced right turn, take Right into parking lots behind dormitories Howry and Falkner OR
(2) Continue to deadend, then take Right onto Dormitory Row West. Park in front of Commons or along Dormitory Row West.

From Hwy 6/Hwy 7 interchange, take Hwy 6 West to Old Taylor Road Exit
Take Right at top of ramp onto Old Taylor Road/University Place
Go halfway through the roundabout and proceed up University Place
At the threeway intersection, turn left onto University Avenue
At fourway stop, turn Right onto Grove Loop/Student Union Drive until you reach Rebel Drive
Turn Left onto Rebel Drive and at fork, veer left onto Dormority Row West
