Scholar to Discuss Women's Status In Iran for Annual Howorth Lecture

The status of women in Iran is to be explored Thursday (Oct. 8) when a renowned women's rights scholar visits the University of Mississippi as guest lecturer for the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies.

The 15th Annual Lucy Somerville Howorth Lecture features Nayereh Tohidi, professor of women's and gender studies at the University of California at Northridge, who plans to discuss "'Women, Islam and Democracy in the Middle East: The Case of Iran." The program, set for 7 p.m. in Bryant Hall, Room 209, is free and open to the public.

Professor Links American Gynecology to Slavery, Irish Immigration in Sept. 23 Lecture

Links between enslaved women and poor Irish immigrant women and the advancement of American gynecology will be discussed by Deirdre Cooper Owens, University of Mississippi assistant professor of history, Wednesday (Sept. 23) in a campus program.

Part of the Southern Studies Brown Bag Lunch & Lecture series in the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, the free, public event is set for noon in the Barnard Observatory lecture hall.

GST Alumnus Update: Alum Headed to England for 2009 Fulbright Study

With bachelor's degrees in history and theatre arts already under his belt, University of Mississippi alumnus Kenneth Lane Jones is on his way to Great Britain as a 2009-10 Fulbright Scholar.

Jones, a native of Water Valley who graduated from UM in 2007, will pursue a graduate certificate program in museum studies at Leicester University. The Fulbright Scholarship will support his research on the little-known history of Britain's Channel Islands, which German forces occupied during World War II.

GST Minors and Staff Updates:

Recent Croft grad ('09) Katie Swain has had her paper "Out of the Closet and into the Mainstream: The Exploitation of Lesbian Imagery in the Music Industry," written in Mary Carruth's G ST H 201 class, accepted at both the Florida Consortium for Women and Gender Studies Conference entitled "Women Mobilizing for Change: Past, Present, Future" and the 18th Women & Society Conference.

Hayley James, who graduated cum laude May 2009 in English with a gender studies minor, is attending the Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Shara Crookston, the Isom teaching assistant from 2006-2009, is now a visiting assistant professor of women's and gender studies at the University of Toledo in Ohio. She completed her dissertation under the direction of Dr. Amy Wells in Higher Education.

Isom Center News:

This fall the Isom Center will be welcoming a new graduate assistant, Elizabeth Feder Hosey, to help with programming and work study student, Taylor Ridling, who is also a Gender Studies minor. Also, Teresa Starkey (ABD, Emory) will be serving as an visiting adjuct instructor and will teaching G ST 201 this fall and G ST 333 in the spring.
