Bone has an ability to (re)distribute itself to reinforce the skeleton where needed. To a certain extent, this happens during the lifetime of an animal. In their natural settings, primates exhibit a wide variety of movements, and each of these will subject the skeleton to stresses. By comparing similarities and differences in the behaviors of several primates with similarities and differences in the bones of these primates, relationships can be made between the form of bones and the function that these bones serve. It is these relationships that we can apply to fossils in order to infer what we don't know - the locomotor activities of extinct animals.
