ARCHAELOGISTS ON TV (AND IN MUSEUMS)

Time Team America

Our own Bryan Haley, Systems Analyst for the Center of Archaeological Research is one of ten archaeologists and other specialists that make up Time Team America, an American adaptation of a long-running show in the UK. The team is given three days to using their combined skills to research some element of a site. Bryan (second from the left) is one of two geophysics specialists on the team who use techniques that "see" what is below ground before digging. “For the first season, we tackled five diverse sites,” says Bryan, “including a 12,000 year old stone tool manufacturing site in South Carolina, a Utah canyon occupied by the Fremont (a southwestern cultural tradition that rather mysteriously disappeared), and a 19th century settlement in Illinois founded by a former slave who had purchased his freedom.” There are several goals for the show: to give the public an accurate portrayal of how archaeology is done, make people aware that interesting archaeology is often nearby and not just in exotic locations, to use the most cutting-edge technologies to take a new look at well known sites, and to entertain viewers.  The show is set to begin airing in the Spring of 2009 on PBS.

Discovery Channel

A Discovery Channel crew filmed a documentary about Gabriel Wrobel's research at the Midnight Terror Cave in Belize.  The show, which aired in February of 2008, is one episode in a new series called “The Bone Detectives” and featured on-camera commentary by Dr. Wrobel about his archeological work on the human remains found inside the cave.

Jay Johnson, Professor of Anthropology, traveled to New York City this September to have a wax sculpture image made in his likeness!   This figure will be shown in a museum exhibit in Alabama honoring famous archaeologists.

SOCIOLOGISTS ON TV ALSO

National Geographic Channel

Ross Haenfler appeared in the National Geographic Channel documentary "Inside Straight Edge." The show examined "positive" and "militant" groups, asking whether straight edge deserves the "gang" label some law enforcement authorities have applied to the movement. Ten radio stations and several newspapers interviewed Ross about the show and his research. Ross Haenfler also recently presented his research on Lifestyle Movements, Straight Edge and Social Change at LSU and Linfield College in Oregon.
