Biography
Gary Long
has been a faculty member at the University of Mississippi since 1976. He earned the Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in sociology from SUNY, Stony Brook (1979 and 1973, respectively). He holds a B.A. in economics, with honors, from California State University at Sacramento (1968). He served in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller.
Dr. Long has taught, in different capacities, at four universities: California State University at Sacramento, Stony Brook, UCLA, and the University of Mississippi. His teaching interests are theory, social psychology, social change, social stratification, death and dying, sociology of literature, introductory, and the Vietnam War. His research interests range from the sociology of literature, the professions, and professional ethics, to the Vietnam War, identity, and the distinctions between traditional and modern society. He has published in The American Sociologist, Social Forces, Teaching Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Contemporary Sociology, The Southern Quarterly and The Texas Review, and contributed to anthologies in philosophy and on literature. He is area chair of the Sociology of Literature L sessions of the American Culture Association. He served as president of the Alabama-Mississippi Sociological Association. He is editor of the association’s journal the Alabama-Mississippi On-Line Journal of Sociology He is a member of the honor societies in economics and sociology. He is an amateur photographer, builds furniture and grows vegetables.
