The Department of Social Work has two student organizations: The Student Social Work Organization for undergraduate students and the Graduate Social Work Student Organization for the graduate students. Both organizations are volunteer groups through which students can develop a support network of peers; develop skills in organization, leadership, and volunteerism; and provide social work visibility in the Oxford-University community. Members are encouraged to perform 20 hours of volunteer service each year.
Both organizations provide input into the Department of Social Work operations and offerings by allowing the officers from both organizations to serve on the department’s advisory board, serve on faculty search committees, and special faculty committee meetings where student input is needed.
Membership dues are nominal and are paid annually. The undergraduate students generally meet every three to four weeks over a noon hour during the semester. The graduate student organization generally meets 3-4 annually. Both groups decide upon academic enrichment, social, fundraising, and service events.
Recent activities include service projects of fundraising for Angel Ranch and Christmas stockings for Head Start children. Social network activities include spring cookouts, an end of the semester study break breakfast, and holiday parties.
