Elder Robert Atwater. Elder Atwater was born in 1908, just down the road from where his father founded Hurricane Creek Primitive Baptist Church two years later. His father had been born a slave. Elder Atwater spent much of his adult life in St. Louis, where he worked construction and lived a life he described as “worldly.” In 1964, he experienced a religious conversion and returned to Mississippi to assume leadership of the church he had grown up in. | |
