Introduction
(continued)

We can take the term “cultural landscape” to mean the physical environment human beings have created through interaction with the world around them.  At its most basic level, the cultural landscape reveals the impact of human beings on the natural world.  On a more complicated level, however, the contemporary cultural landscape is the product of human interaction, in both recent past and present, with earlier versions of the manmade environment.  Conceived of this way, we can begin to think of the world around us as the product of historical accumulation (both accidental and intentional).  Thus we can begin to view our environment’s appearance as an artifact of sorts, and analyze it as such.
