Introduction
(continued)

This series of photographs focuses specifically on the Southern cultural landscape and touches upon several themes traditionally recognized as Southern.  These include the ever-presence and importance of the past in Southern culture; the direct, personal relationship many Southerners have with their physical surroundings; and the omnipresence of religious consciousness in the South.  All of these find frequent expression, intentional or otherwise, in the physical environment Southerners have created for themselves to live in.  I hope viewers will find this evident in the selection of images that follows.  Comments are welcome; please direct them to dwharton@olemiss.edu.

David Wharton
