Fiddler Bobby Carter comes from a very musical family. Many of the Monroe County native’s family play the fiddle or another musical instrument, turning many of their family functions into jam sessions. The interest in music also goes back several generations. Carter’s great uncles recorded several tunes for a couple of different recording companies in the late 1920s under the name “Carter Brothers and Son”. These records have since become very popular among old-time string band enthusiasts.
Carter has been an active performer throughout his life. He started out backing his fiddler father on guitar, and then learned to fiddle from him. Carter has played in numerous bands and has been an active performer in fiddling contests and jam sessions at bluegrass concerts throughout the region.
