Alabama
An exhibit exploring the political career of George C. Wallace will be shown at the Monroe County Courthouse Museums in Monroeville, Alabama, from September 4 through October 31. Kentucky
The Center for Kentucky History and Politics at Eastern Kentucky University will host a one-day symposium on the topic “Kentucky: Is It Southern?” on September 21. The first panel will include Lowell Harrison and Jim Klotter, authors of A New History of Kentucky, giving a historical overview. John Egerton will be the luncheon speaker, presenting “Notes from the Hot Bread Zone.” One panel, “Region, Race, Gender, and Religion,” will feature Loyal Jones, David Dick, Nelson Dawson, Lori Risch, Gerald Smith, and Carol Crowe-Carraco. The last session of the day will deal with politics and will include former Governor Ned Breathitt, Malcolm Jewell, Penny Miller, and John Parker. Texas
The Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin has extended through October 14 its exhibition Martin Luther King Remembered: Photographs by Flip Schulke. Schulke met and became a close friend of Dr. King while on assignment for Ebony magazine in 1958 and spent the next decade documenting him and the civil rights movement. On display are 30 photographs from the photojournalist’s personal archive, recently acquired by the Center. For details contact Lynn Bell, exhibits curator, at 512-495-4515.

Mississippi
The Pilgrimage Garden Club’s 27th annual Antiques Forum will be held November 8-10, 2000, in Natchez, Mississippi, at the historic Radisson Eola Hotel. South Carolina
The Greenville County Museum of Art in Greenville, South Carolina, announces Southern Scene, a special exhibition set for November 15, 2000-May 6, 2001. Between the two World War, American artists turned away from European influence to embrace the heartland and capture images that expound on the wholesomeness of life in the United States. Largely realistic and representational, this exhibition focuses primarily on the work of Southern-related artists such as Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton, Frederick S.
