1996 Elvis Conference Call For Papers

The Second Annual International

Conference on Elvis Presley

The University of Mississippi

Oxford, Mississippi

August 3-9, 1996

"Then Sings My Soul:" Elvis and the Sacred South

Submission Deadline: February 1, 1996

The conference seeks creative, nonpedantic, adventurous investigations of religion, music, and society in the life of Elvis Presley and the rise of the Elvis South. While emphasis will be placed on the gospel music and evangelical cultures of the American South, we welcome papers and performances exploring the "Elvis Phenomenon" in a variety of historical and theoretical contexts. The conference invites presentations from scholars, critics, and commentators, as well as from the people who make the music and culture of the "Sacred South."
