On May 16-18, 1996, the Center will cosponsor a cultural resource training conference focusing on historic Southern landscapes and gardens with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the Natchez Trace Parkway office of the National Park Service, and other organizations. This three-day event, to be held at the University of Mississippi, is designed to help historians, landscape architects, archaeologist, land-use planners, builders, architectural historians, and other individuals who work with cultural resources explore and learn how to sensitively develop the Southern landscape. The conference will offer several bus tours of the area surrounding Oxford as well as informative talks on the multilayered Southern landscape from the prehistoric period to the present day, technical sessions on preservation planning, and problem solving that will synthesize the formal information presented and sites visited.
