AASLH announced awards recognizing 110 organizations and individuals at its
1994 annual meeting held last fall in Omaha, Nebraska. Mary Lohrenz of the
Mississippi State Historical Museum formally presented the AASLH awards to
William Ferris, director of the Center, and Jordan at the 1995 annual meeting of
the Mississippi Historical Society this spring in Columbus.

The AASLH Awards Program was founded in 1945 to establish and encourage
standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of
state, local, and regional history throughout North America. The individuals and
organizations receiving awards from the American Association for State and Local
history reflect the outstanding work that is currently taking place in the
field, noted Patricia Gordon Michael, executive director of AASLH. It is their
ongoing dedication that enables the preservation and promotion of our diverse
history. Despite cutbacks in funding and resources, these award winners persevere
with the important task of preserving our heritage.

AASLH publishes books, technical publications, History News magazine, and
Dispatch newsletter; coordinates regional training workshops and annual meetings;
and serves as a networking source for individuals in the history field.
